• Label stock – imaging on ink? What is the label material?
• Application – what is the label being used for? What is the label being exposed to (i.e. heat, chemical, outdoors, blood)?
• Durability expectations? What are the durability requirements for the label and image quality (scratch, smudge)?
• UL/CSA/FDA approvals?
• Image requirement – fine fonts or rotated barcodes?
• Print Speed?
• What type of ribbons are currently being used; wax, wax/resin, resin?
• What is the ribbon volume? How many labels per day/week/month?

Tips
The width of the ribbon should be slightly wider than the label, including the carrier
• Too wide causes ribbon wrinkle during printing
• Too narrow causes damage to the print-head resulting in poor print quality
• Printer OEM´s recommend that the print-head be cleaned after every roll of ribbon with a non-abrasive cloth soaked in Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
• Test before placing an order
• Ask for lab support (optimum speed/temperature settings) on the customer’s label stock
• Rotated barcodes may require that the printer run at a slower speed or use a higher grade ribbon
